“Before Whiskey, Before Guinness, There Was Mead”

IrishMead.ie is the front door to Irish mead’s revival — a home for the oldest drink in Irish history, made the way it always should have been: with native honey, native bees, and a story worth telling.

WHAT IS MEAD?

Long before whiskey, before stout, there was mead. It was the drink of Irish kings, poets, and wedding feasts — brewed from honey, water, and time. Somewhere along the way, Ireland forgot it. We’re bringing it back.

Whether it’s a team out of the office, a couple planning their toast, or a home brewer chasing their first batch.

Join the Revival

Mead-making is enjoying a quiet revival across Ireland, and we want to be at
the centre of it. Beyond our own products, we support and celebrate the wider
home-brewing community — including through The Mether Awards, Ireland’s
homebrew mead competition, with winners taking home the Mether Cup.

ABOUT US

ABOUT US
Ireland has its own native honey bee — Apis mellifera mellifera, the native dark bee — found almost nowhere else in Europe in its pure form. It’s under real pressure, from imported bee strains and habitat loss alike. Through the Inishturk Native Irish Honey Bee Sanctuary, we’re working to conserve it: protecting a genetically pure population on Inishturk Island and supporting its future across Irish beekeeping more widely. This isn’t a side project — it’s the reason the honey tastes the way it does, and the reason the mead has a story worth telling at all. This isn’t a drinks brand that happened to find a good story. The story — the bees, the land, the history — came first. The mead is what we’re making of it.
Behind every bottle is a beekeeper. Hives across Co. Wicklow, on the Mayo mainland at Kiladoon, and out on Inishturk Island — as native and as Irish as the honey itself.
